Harvey Milk was an activist, organizer, and the first openly gay man elected to public office. Throughout Milk’s career he advocated for the LGBTQ+ community in San Francisco by fighting against the Briggs Initiative that would have banned gays and lesbians from working in California schools. Harvey Milk passed many gay rights ordinances in the city of San Francisco before his assassination. We celebrate Harvey’s legacy on his Birthday and it is a day to educate schools about Milk’s extraordinary leadership skills and advocacy work that set the stage for many LGBTQ+ civil rights advances.
The Grand Rapids Pride Center aims to be at the center of a vibrant and inclusive community that supports all LGBTQ individuals.
